14 Ford Transit Cargo Van Up-Fitting Ideas (2024)

Havis Prisoner Transport Vehicle

You’d think the Transit’s massive cargo hold is right for packages, but it’s large enough to fit prisoners, too. It’s the perfect size for moving a handful of prisoners. There’s no need for a large bus with this.

Enough Room For The Lock Box

The Transit’s spacious interior allows for a Harvis Prisoner Transport Insert. It's a cage thatslips into the Transit’s interior, taking it from a sparse cargo space and turning it into secured transportation. There are seats with restraints, a second pair of thick doors at the rear, and allows access to the front passenger compartment.

Nor-Cal Vans Executive Shuttle Bus

From the outside, this looks like your typical transporter – maybe something for the elderly in your neighborhood to get to and from doctor visits. But there's more inside. School bus-like doors replace the sliding side door.

Subtle Comfort

Inside, it looks more like a van than a bus. Instead of benches pushed to the sides, rows of seats line the interior –with what looks like seating for up to 11 or more. There even appears to be some cargo room left behind the rear-most bench seat.

Sherrod Conversion Van

We know what a van's exterior looks like, so not having a clear exterior picture isn't a problem. This is a van with a nondescript exterior that hides a semi-luxurious interior. If you have to travel with a group, this is the way to do it.

Mobile Luxury

It's difficult to mesh luxury and van in one's mind, butSherrod Conversion Van somehow does it. The interior has plush leather seats thatfocus on comfort as opposed to moving a lot of people. Seats aren't crammed inside, and the interior looks luxurious.

Thor Motor Coach Class B Motorhome

It’s hard to image a Ford Transit van living underneath this motorhome exterior, but that’s what Thor Motor Coach did. The company converted the van into a Class B motorhome, which took extensive modifications.

Home Away From Home

The modifications widen the van’s cargo area, making more room for the kitchen, dining area, bed, and bathroom. It looks upscale and comfy, and the perfect place to spend a week camping, if that’s your thing.

Endless Possibilities

Just like the exterior, the inside is a clean slate for whatever the job entails. Open shelves and the van’s tall roof makes organizing and accessing the cargo area a breeze.

Medix Specialty Vehicles Ambulance

The Ford Transit van isn’t just for law enforcement officers. Other first responders can convert the van, too, as Medix Specialty Vehicles does. The exterior is plain, but it has a host of lights to warn drivers on the road.

Life-Saving Mobility

Inside, the ambulance has seating for three in the cargo area, plus room for a patient on a stretcher. The seats have restraints, and there’s a wall of shelves for medical necessities. Boxy ambulances ride on van platforms, so why not continue the trend?

Outside Van Adventure Van

Sadly, there are no exterior photos of this Outside Van model, but from what we can see, it’s the ultimate camping companion. On top, there appears to be a pop-up tent for sleeping, and we can see an awning extending off the side for shade.

Enough Creature Comforts For The Outdoors

Inside, the van takes a versatile approach to comfort. There are seats in the rear for additional passengers with what appears to be a small kitchen/sink area. We can’t see any bathroom. However, there’s extra sleeping space in the cargo area.

VanDOIt Passenger Hauler / Adventure Van / Mobile Office

This van is all about doing everything. There’s extra seating, extra cargo space, and a sleeping area. The rear has room for a mountain bike – or another mode of transporation– with a slide-out shelf so you can efficiently work on it and perform repairs.

It Can Be Whatever You Desire

Inside, there are storage areas and seats, with the company advertising kitchen and toilet pods available for installation. This is one versatile van.

TransitWorks Wheelchair Vans And Mobility Shuttles

Here’s another company converting the Transit into something most people don’t often think about –mobility solutions for people using wheelchairs. This is great for a ride-share service or nursing home.

Wheelchairs Welcomed

Inside, there’s room for wheelchairs with the floor-mounted seats on gliders to allow for adjustments. At the rear, there’s a lift to get the wheelchair into the back of the van.

Dejana Work Van With Slide-Out Shelving

From the outside, the Dejana work van looks like your typical Transit. It’s utilitarian styling, gray plastic cladding, and unassuming appearance hides the interior’s neat features.

Slide-Out Workability

Storing and access equipment in a van can be a nightmare without the proper setup. But Dejana solves that problem with unique, slide-out shelving at the rear of the van. Open the barn doors, and workers have access to an assortment of tools without taking up unnecessary space.

Midway Specialty Vehicles Golf Mobile Showroom

Getting your products in front of new eyes is hard. But Midway Specialty Vehicles hopes to solve that problem with a mobile showroom. Yup, companies can bring new and exciting products right to you!

A One-On-One Sales Experience

Inside this particular example, Midway Specialty Vehicles designed the Transit to be a mobile golf showroom. There’s room for shirts, pants, clubs and golf shoes – everything you’d need to set off on your first round. It doesn’t look like lessons are included, though.

The Shoe Shine Guys Mobile Shoe Shine Stand

Here’s one van that blends the Transit’s blank-slate offering with a novel idea –a mobile shoe shine operation. The slab-sided exterior is perfect for a graphic advertising the business while the large doors offer excellent cargo access.

Shine On The Go

Inside, the van’s tall roof and expansive cargo area provide plenty of room for the tools necessary for a shoe-shine operation. There's even enough space for a polisher and storage rack.

Legion Digital Mobile LED Billboard

Sometimes, it’s not about what’s inside a Transit van that makes it versatile, but it’s what’s on the outside that counts. Legion Digital Mobile turns the large Transit van into a mobile LED billboard with speakers. Not only can you visually assault unsuspecting citizens, but you can squawk at them, too. And it looks like there’s still access to the Transit’s cargo area.

Ursa Minor Vehicles Transit Connect Adventure Camper

This one is cheating because it’s a Transit Connect –the smaller van in Ford’s lineup. However, we had to include it because of its ingenious versatility. There’s plenty of seating inside, and the roof is home to a pop-up camper for sleeping, making the Transit Connect a compelling camper.

Vans get a bad rap, especially minivans. They're a compromise – a middle ground between parental mediocrity and necessary versatility. It's the ultimate people mover with about as much charm as a local politician greasing the bureaucratic wheels for a new housing development. But conversion vans are a different story, and their dull facade is fading – blank sheets of automotive potential.

Ford showcased its larger Transit van and all the up-fitting possibilities that turn the empty cargo space into everything from a luxury transporter to an ambulance. There are endless configurations, and Ford displayed a variety of ideas. Transit sales are up 23 percent since Ford introduce the Transit line in 2014 with the larger Transit driving 78 percent of that growth, according to the Dearborn automaker. The cargo van isn't formoving companies anymore. Click through to see 14 ideas for your next cargo van conversion.
